View Full Version : Any Guitarists out there??

Not the Guitar Hero Guitarists... i mean the real deal, or any instrument, doesn't have to be guitars... if u do, tell a little bit about it: What you play, how you started, why you started, what songs have you learned... etc.
I started about 2 years ago... i take lessons at this music store about 5 minutes from my house... I started learning because my grandfather was a very good local bass guitarist, and i loved it when he would play guitar, so i started lessons. I've learned probably 35-40 songs probably more if you count the ones i learned when starting out that arnt really songs, and the songs i have forgotten... I'm now learning Beutiful Day by U2, it's a pretty easy song but it's a very fun song. I'm learning it because me and my dad are doing a duet, (he's singing, im playing guitar) at a talent show at his work. Should be fun... too bad my dad isn't much of a singer... i'll just have to turn up my amp... I've got 2 guitars. a 1970 gibson sg, and this other old accoustic guitar... dunno what year, but it's pretty old. I also have this fretted bass, it sucks royally, but i think im gonna buy a new bass this christmas. The guitars i have now are from my grandfather. I have 2 amps, one is really old, and other is sorta old, probably from the early 80's, i got those from my grandfather also.
if you read that long paragraph, i thank you... if you got any comments, post!
just wondering if anyone else plays... Music makes the world go around.

I have an electric guitar (GR5511R blue moon, was given to me), I'm not brilliant, I love to just play as many tunes as possible, I learned Where is My Mind by the Pixies bout a month back, although I play my drums a lot more, currently trying to learn the drums from Queen of the Stone Age's song "No One Knows"

lol, Cobain suck on guitar.
My favorites are Jerry Cantrell, Tom Morello and Kim Thayil.
There's no real reason why they are there exept Morello just because he got a incredible inovative sound. But both Thayil and Cantrell have done really good songs, and Cantrell is also a great songwriter.
I usually play on my dads stratocaster (A fender made in usa) but i'm planning on buying a new guitar for myself.

I'm a guitarist and i suck dick at guitar hero
There's alot of good guitarists, but it's all about your definition of good. I could say Yngwie Malmsteen is the best guitarist, but then again, i'm not really impressed with fast playing. Most of the guitarists i really like are not likely to be incredibly good at playing, although they do come up with bad-ass music. I basically would say that Dream Theater has the best guitarist in most ways, but then i also like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani because they make interesting music aswell. In general, i do not really enjoy a dickmeasuringcontest in "who has the best guitarplayer idol". If the music is good, they are likely to be good guitarists. Bands are better than single guitarists playing their own stuff.

When i was a bit younger, i liked basically any music that had distorted guitars with simple riffs and fast solos. Lately i've realized how incredibly boring music like that can be. I've started listening to more complex and advanced music, which is alot more interesting to both play and listen to.
I could basically ask anyone i know what they think about Nirvana, all of them would say "they have some good songs but overall they're boring as hell". It's just not interesting anymore. A friend sent me a song on messenger, saying it was a new metal band, which he obviously thought were good. When i listened to it i just felt like it was the same old thing over again. One band started doing it, alot of other bands copied it and managed getting rich by doing it. The pioneers are basically the only ones that still know how to make variations of that style and still not changing it. I don't mind people borrowing parts of styles, that's a way of making new stuff, but taking a whole style, trying to make music in it, is just silly.
Even if Nirvana were the starters of their specific thing, i think they're boring!

I agree with Wezzli, nirvana isn't enough interresting. But everybody may like the music they think is good, as long as they don't bother me with it.
When it comes to very complex music there's only 1 band, and that's tool. When you listen on their songs you get amazed by everything, and the rhythm can just change so quick, really a band I recomend!

I actually quite think nirvana and pink floyd are very similar to eachother. Both have a lot of songs that everyone knows... they got real rich, then they fell apart.
Also, with music, you can't change someone's true opinions on what music they love. I Hate rap, and my friend loves it. We each try to switch the other to listen to the music we want them to. But we realized we won't stop listining to the music we desire the most. Now i don't consider rap music, but that's just my opinion. He thinks rock is full of druggy's and headbangers that have lost their voice because of all the sreaming, and that is his opinion. We leave it as is, and don't say much of it.
When people critisize bands that they dislike, it's the same thing. If they don't like it, why should you protest it? why not just let them carry on playing it?
Now, about the copying of other music... I don't really get it either... Now a days in "alternative rock" theres 2 types of new rock... Emo type - like Brand new, my chemical romance, as i lay dieing, and some other bands... To me they sound all the same... The other type is the Fast paced, heavy, punk rock. some examples of that are, Avenged Sevenfold, DragonForce, In Flames, Decendents, i think those bands also sound the same.
When you go back into history you will see the same stuff... in the 1970's there were 2 main types of rock... bands like 38 special, boston, eagles, and kansas, journey. And harder rock like...AcDc, Black Sabath, Kiss, Rolling Stones, Van Halen. All of those bands in those 2 types of rock sound almost the same... The only bands that i hear to be real different our Led Zeppelin, Lynard Skynard, and ZZ Top. So it's not a new thing to be copying from other bands... I don't really call it copying, it's just what type of music was in the era....
So i end that huge essay with this...
Hail Hipstiff the best guitarist of Tibianordic (well, so far)

There's quite a great difference between Pink Floyd and Nirvana. Perhaps they are similar in what happened to them, but on the musical side it's quite easy, Nirvana sucks and Pink Floyd doesn't.
You obviously misunderstood my talk about "copying" styles. All the groups you listed are really very different to me, but it's still not what im talking about. I'm talking about 5 new and different groups sounding the same. Where do you find the punk in In Flames music?

@Wezzli; Well, you've got to have an example. I began with learning songs by others, but nowadays I just improvise and train scales alot...
that's the thing, improvising, making own riffs, solos and exercises is worth 50 times more than playing other peoples songs. i started off with playing mostly other peoples songs, but i realized i could do almost all of it quite easily, except incredibly fast and lame solos, that of course takes more time to learn. then now lately, i just don't find anything to play that is hard enough, until i started making my own things with improvisation, not even just by scales, but just randomly playing stuff, whatever comes to your mind. there are some songs by others that i really like to play, mostly dream theater or opeth, with weird beats.
and ye, there is a limit to what you can do with straight chords only, so then just find out different ways to play it, like picking them like arpeggios or whatever. it's always better than playin other peoples songs. most guitarists tend to put all the practise on soloish playing, but the truth is that you're not worth much as a guitarist if you cant play comps for a drummer. it's all about fast solos, but still a slow solo with the perfect timing and the perfect notes will sound alot better than an incredibly fast solo

You can't really compete in being the most unique band because every band is unique even if they play covers. I downloaded about every album i could find made by them and i've listened to most of it now. They're quite good actually, but i can't say they made their own genre or anything like that. Once i spoke to a guy from some random band, we were talking about music like Dream Theater. He basically thought he could take two parts of the song and make it a whole song. Although that would not be as interesting. The thing about Dream Theater is their creativity, constantly changing beats, riffs, drums and playingstyle. I reckon it's all about the question "what do you want to supply, musical skills or lyrical skills?" Some bands could make a song without advanced playing, but with a good singer and perfect lyrics, while some bands could make a fairly advanced song without as much effort put into the singing and lyrics. Both examples could make really good songs, but it would be even better to have both of them put together.

I've played since Febuary/March this year, so I guess a bit more than 6 months or so. I was blessed with the privelege of getting a private teacher. My dad's in the sound industry as a salesman and he's got a lot of contacts in the music industry in Sweden, so he fixed me a private teacher who's been a reputated studiomusician since the 80s. He's also been a guitar teacher so he's a very good one.
He taught me the very basics of the guitar as I've got really bad patience and never really had the energy to learn from books/films/internet. In the beginning he saw me every 2 weeks but nowadays it's more like once every or second month, he's more like a mentor at the moment.
Anyway, he's taught me a bit of theory which is great knowing if you like improvising or like writing music with for example a band. I basically know the form of every minor and major chords from the E, A and D string and also sevenths, nines and maj7s and most of the sus-chords aswell. All you need to know is how one chord is formed and you will know exactly how the A-G chords are shaped as well (just a little tip to the new beginners, and I'm not talking about open chords, I'm talking about barred chords).
I own one acoustic, a western Yamaha with a microphone and output but I mainly play my electric guitar, a Fender Telecaster Highway One. I'm saving a bit of money now to buy me a semi-hollowbody, I'm thinking of a Yamaha SA500. It would give me a lot of versality to the rest of my gear.
The greatest guitarist ever:
Jimi Hendrix
Johnny Marr
Jimmy Page
Tom Morello
Johnny Greenwood
John Frusciante
Chet Atkins
and last and probably least skilled of these; Noel Gallagher, mostly because I really admire his work as a composer.
@Stern, I seriously think Muse sucks, big time. All my friends think so too. I have yet to meet anyone who actually likes the band. It's just a mess of sounds and too many layers of everything. And the guitarist is not very good at all, although someone in the band is a pretty good pianist.

That might just be because the saying is incredibly logical. It's quite a new band, so how could any band sound like them yet? In a couple of years there could be bands that sound like them, but that still doesn't make them any better or any more out of the ordinary.
I'd like to hear your personal reasons for calling them more "unique" than other bands. The point is that it's just pointless because it's all about your own personal taste.
I could say the exact same about the guys i play with in Ulf's garage. We may sound like other bands, but there's no band that sounds like us. What's really the point of that? It's not like you get a great load of extra knowlegde just by hearing someone say that. It's just stating the obvious.

No, and that's exactly what they mean. Alot of bands has been able to copy them, but none has, that makes them pretty unique, doesnt it?
I don't think i've ever seen any larger amount of bullshit ever written by the same user. Your way of discussing is just insufficient. Saying the wrong things and then trying to cover them up with another rapid radical change of your previous messages meaning. I speak to alot of people like you, mostly they're just fjortises that just get stuck with one band that they obviously have to brag and boast about even if they don't really have any good reasons for it. If you just say that you like the band, i won't mind, they are okay and you have the right to your own opinion. On the other hand, claiming that they are more unique than any other band, is just wrong, if you haven't heard all bands in the world.
I very much despise your usage of the word "unique". Every damn band in the whole world is unique and so what? You could have used "exceptional" or "out of the ordinary", but that word wouldn't have worked with the band because they aren't anything out of the ordinary. Heard it all before, it's just boring.
Quite frankly, there are two sides of the metal genre: Those who want to do something new and special and those who just want to go with the mainstream bullshit and get rich.
Just because noone has come up with the ridiculous idea to copy this band, does not directly imply that they are unique. It takes quite a long time for a band to get a good enough foothold for people to want to sound like them, 8 years is not that long considering they most likely did not have a fully developed style and sound during their first years of playing. The saying "we sound like many bands, but no band sounds like us" could go with anything, really anything. Every drummer, guitarist or bassplayer is unique and therefore you can't really copy it totally, but you can still have a sound close to theirs.
You should really try listening to groups like Diablo, Opeth, Dream Theater, Meshuggah. I can even send you some good songs if you want. I'm not saying you should like them, but im saying it's something different.

I don't know any band from post-95 at least who are so unique that they create a genre of their own, so to speak.

Exactly, this is the era of mainstream soundalikes.

@Wezzli: You should know that I'm a great fan of Opeth. And I have heard Meshuggah, but their style is a bit too technical for my tastes (And I dont like the vocalist). I'm pretty sure I've heard Dream Theater, but I'll check some of their stuff out anyway. And I'm far from entirely stuck on only The Project Hate, there are bands I like even more.

Good then, fjortispeople that just listen to simple music are missing out on good stuff. You could check songs like Pull me under, Erotomania, Panic attack, Misunderstood and Wait for sleep. They are pretty good songs, also listen to The mirror, quite interesting with many variations on what you can do with triods (they play the triods in the same speed the whole song, but it sounds different every time).
Upload project hate albums if you have them whole and pm me adress, i only got separate songs, which is gay.
