Default Fan Art - by Dragonskull

Here's a few Tibia fan art pieces I've made during the years..

These have been PotD's over at TibiaNews, hence the size.
(Newest first)

Barbarian Brutetamer

Nightmare Knight

Huntress (Paladin)

..
Some others, random sizes and I'm not sure which is oldest.

Nomad

Miss Witch Apprentice (not entirely finished I'd say)

Aranaz the Elder Druid (my main character)

Greendevil (or some possessed Goblin if you prefer)

Thanks! Yeh, it's a bit embarrassing looking back at what I did only a few years ago, but everyone has to start somewhere and I'm happy I've learnt so quickly and keep learning, of course. It helps a lot that I have so many different things to draw. I work for Warshop Industries developing a game called Wartide, where I'm a OOGA (Out of Game Artist) - ie Concept and Promotional Art.

May I ask, how do you start working on such an artwork? What programs do you use? I'm intersted in learning this.

I've used Photoshop CS2 for all of these (some with underlying scans of freehand traditional art) and with the help of a Wacom (pen tablet), it's almost like drawing with a pencil- your pressure on the pen affects f.ex. opacity of the line you draw so that helps a lot.

As for starting off, I like to think that I start sketching something and work it out, but I don't really do that, I'm not that rational and organized when I draw. I decide on a pose I want to try and make, and I start off drawing the shape more or less, then I move in to fix some details straight away and notice some awkward parts which I try to fix, I almost always end up putting too much detail in the face and then quickly wrap up the body with some splash-on colours and 'smudge it all together with some scattering so it looks remotely like a texture' .. though I always draw it purely in black first (which is sort of a drawback, because I have to do it almost all over with colours on top of it afterwards, can't help the habit though).

All in all, it's a sketch that I work in a pretty detailed face to, and then I get bored and smudge everything else in place. Sometimes I go back and add more details, once find inspiration to finish a piece. F.ex the Huntress up there, it was first a pretty lame figure with legs all in the shadow so you really couldn't see them, the hands was sort of like those of a pig. The background shares the style of how it used to be. Then I got it back up a week later and made some details on the legs and finished up some rather human hands.

An example of the other 'way' is the Brutetamer, which was a 10minute drawing where you can see how I covered a lot of detail-work by simply giving her a fur-"top" and cut the picture below her waist (also got rid of parts of the one hand) and you can see the other hand is just.. very simple and not really correct. The face isn't much detailed either, I'm surprised I bothered to show the eyes, it wouldn't be much of a problem to just hide them in a shadow there. Then of course, the detail-work is somewhere, and this time it's the skull, which in fact is a separate drawing that I did the same day where I experiemented with drawing skulls. The background is merely a barbarian camp concept which I can't remember if I just copied from somewhere or laid down quickly.

As for a different approach (whew I'm writing a novel) the Greendevil, is something that started out as purely a head:

And then I decided to make something more out of it at a later time, and that was the result. You can notice that it wasn't a flawless addition, considering the size of the head- but hey, I think the big head is cool. :P

I might take the time to write a proper starters tutorial later on (I had started on one earlier, over at TN, but I never continued it so as far as I recall it only explained some basics of facial features- non-emotional ones).

EDIT: Ah, forgot to add one more thing- as of lately I've tried to actually establish a style of my own and also to progress art somewhat the same way. This is one of the more detailed sketches I've ever done. It's getting old now, and there's not much more work done to it yet, but that's because I got busy with University and I plan on working it out this summer, if I find the time to do it. There might be some other drawings in that gallery by the way- my inactive DeviantArt account.

All of them (imho) look far better than current, official "artworks" on tibia.com.

I wish I could draw people like you do. Want to swap my ability to draw horses for your ability to draw people? =) My favorite is your drawing of the barbarian.
